MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It communicates musical performance instructions, such as which notes to play and when to play them. A MIDI file stores those instructions so you can change a melody, adjust its timing, or try another instrument without recording the performance again.

What is MIDI, and how does it work?

Think of MIDI as instructions for a musician. It describes the performance; an instrument supplies the sound. Typical note information includes pitch, start time, duration, and velocity. MIDI can also carry performance controls such as sustain and pitch bend.

A MIDI file, usually ending in .mid or .midi, is useful when you want to rearrange a musical part. It does not contain the original singer's voice, recorded instruments, or finished mix.

MIDI vs. MP3 and WAV: which should you use?

Choose the format according to what you need to change or share:

  • MIDI: Use it to edit individual notes, change a musical part's instrument, or move an arrangement into a digital audio workstation (DAW).
  • MP3: Use it to share a compact audio recording that listeners can play without choosing instruments.
  • WAV: Use it when you need an audio file for further production or delivery, commonly as uncompressed PCM audio.

For example, a piano recording preserves the sound of that performance. A MIDI version lets you move one note or play the phrase with a different instrument. To share that new sound consistently, render the edited arrangement to audio.

MIDI generator vs. MIDI editor: what is the difference?

A MIDI generator creates note data. A MIDI editor lets you change it. They solve different stages of the same creative task.

How to convert audio to MIDI

Audio-to-MIDI conversion estimates musical notes from a recording. It is a transcription process, so the result needs listening and correction. Renaming an MP3 or WAV file to .mid does not convert it, and transcription cannot recover the original production session.

1. Choose a clear instrumental source

Begin with a short phrase and a single instrument whose notes are easy to hear. Decide whether you want to work on the melody, bass, or another part before generating anything.

For an eligible song in your account, use vocal and instrumental separation to prepare an instrumental result. Listen to it before continuing: removing vocals does not isolate every instrument. A backing track containing drums, piano, bass, and strings is still a complex mix, and can produce inaccurate note data.

2. Generate MIDI from an eligible track

Open the AI MIDI generator from audio, sign in, and choose a completed instrumental track from the available list. Submit it with Generate MIDI. Generation requires an eligible subscription; check the current plans and MIDI access before starting.

This page uses eligible instrumental tracks from your account. It is not a general upload form for arbitrary MP3 or WAV files.

3. Review the result in your library

Go to your music library to check the task result. Once MIDI note data is available, use Edit in MIDI to continue in the browser editor.

Listen to the phrase before adjusting individual notes. Check whether the melody moves in the right direction, whether any notes jump an octave, and whether sustained notes have been split into several short events. Work on the errors that are most obvious to your ear first.

How to edit MIDI online with a piano roll

A piano roll displays pitches vertically and time horizontally. Each note appears as a block: its position shows when it starts and its length shows how long it lasts. Open the browser MIDI editor to inspect and refine the generated part.

Use this editing order for a first pass:

  1. Correct pitch. Compare suspicious notes with the source. A wrong octave can make an otherwise recognizable melody sound unrelated.
  2. Remove extra notes. Audition very short events before deleting them. Some may be transcription errors; others may be intentional ornaments.
  3. Adjust note lengths. Repair gaps in held notes and remove overlaps that make the phrase muddy.
  4. Refine timing. Check the tempo and musical pulse before moving notes onto the grid. Preserve timing variations that make the phrase feel natural.
  5. Listen again. Play the edited phrase in context, then export the MIDI when you are happy with the musical result.

Try a four-bar example: keep the opening two bars recognizable, change the final note of bar three, and leave more space before the last note. Compare both versions by ear. This gives you a small, manageable arrangement exercise instead of a whole song to repair at once.

After importing the exported file into your DAW, assign a virtual instrument to its MIDI track. Audition the phrase with piano, synth, or another sound, and adjust articulation to suit it. A quick piano line may need longer notes when played by a slow-attack string patch.

Common audio-to-MIDI problems

Why does the MIDI sound different from the original?

Separate two questions: are the notes correct, and is the playback instrument appropriate? A correct melody played with a different patch will sound different. Wrong pitches or rhythms require editing the notes themselves.

Why are there too many notes?

A busy mix or ambiguous note boundaries can make transcription harder. Start again with a clearer eligible source if the result is difficult to recognize. For a mostly usable phrase, remove unwanted events a few at a time while comparing with the recording.

Why is my MIDI file silent in a DAW?

Check that the track has an instrument loaded, that its output is routed correctly, and that neither the track nor the instrument is muted. The file provides instructions; the instrument produces the sound.

Can MIDI preserve vocals?

MIDI can represent a vocal melody as notes, but it does not preserve the singer's recorded voice, words, breaths, or effects. Keep the audio or separated vocal track when you need those details.

Can I convert any MP3 or WAV to MIDI here?
